Half day excursion to Ancient Ostia excavations

The tour develops throught the well preserved ruins of the ancient town of Ostia (Ostia Antica), located approximately 30 minutes from Rome. This large archeological site, originally located at the mouth of the River Tiber represented for years Rome's seaport. Due to the silting, the site now lies 3 kilometers from the sea. The site maintains an excellent preservation of its ancient buildings and magnificent frescoes. Ostia seems to be one of the first Roman colonia; according to various ancient writers, Ostia has been founded by Anco Marzio, the fourth king of Rome, who may have ruled in the 7th century BC. In 68 BC, the town was sacked by pirates. During the sacking, the port was set on fire and the consular war fleet was destroyed. A strong army raised by Pompeo Magno succeeded in defeating the invasors in one year. The town was then rebuilt, under the influence of Tiberius who ordered the building of the town's first Forum. The town was also soon enriched by the construction of a new harbor on the northern mouths of the Tiber. Ostia grew to 50,000 inhabitants in the 2nd century, reaching a peak of some 75,000 inhabitants in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. With the end of the Roman Empire, Ostia fell slowly into decay, and was finally abandoned in the 9th century due to the repeated invasions and sackings by Arab pirates, including the Battle of Ostia a naval battle in 849 between Christian and Saracens. In the Middle Ages bricks from buildings in Ostia were used for several other occasions. The Leaning Tower of Pisa was entirely built of material originally belonging to Ostia. The site maintains remarkable ruins: starting from Porta Romana, proceeding along the main road of the ancient city, called Decumanus Maximus the visit will highlights some remarkable religious and political buildings, the thermal baths of Neptune, one of the public services of the city constructed by Adriano and ornated with fine mosaics; the restored theater built by Agrippa in the first century b.C. that can hold up to 3,000 spectators, the House of Diana, the Forum, the Temple of Rome and Augustus and the Basilica: a large rectangular aula, encircled by an arcade.

Includes private car with driver, half-day guided tour with English speaking local guide and entrance fees at Ancient Ostia excavations.

Half day excursion to Tivoli

This morning depart Rome for an excursion to Tivoli located approximately 45 minutes from Rome, at the falls of the Aniene River, where it issues from the Sabine hills; the panorama from this enchanting hill town offers spectacular views out over the roman countryside.
From Etruscan times Tibur, a Sabine city, was the seat of the Tiburtine Sibyl. There are two small temples above the falls, the rotunda traditionally associated with Vesta and a rectangular temple dedicated to the Sibyl of Tibur. In the nearby woods, Faunus had a sacred grove. During the Roman age Tibur maintained a certain importance, being on Via Tiburtina, the important way that Romans had to follow to cross the mountain regions of the Apennines and reach the region of Abruzzo, where romans' fiercest enemenies such as Volsci, Sabini and Samnites used to live. Tibur allied itself with the Gauls in 361 BC. Vestiges remain of its defensive walls of this period, in opus quadrata. In 338 BC, however, Tibur was defeated and absorbed by the Romans. The city acquired Roman citizenship in 90 BC and became a resort area famed for its beauty and its good water, and was enriched by many Roman villas. The most famous one, of which the ruins remain, is the Villa Adriana (Hadrian's Villa).
During the Renaissance period, popes and cardinals did not limit their embellishment program to Rome, and erected buildings in Tivoli also. The most famous of these is the Villa d'Este, begun in 1549 for Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este and richly decorated with an ambitious program of frescoes by famous painters of the late Roman Mannerism. Villa d'Este will be the highlight of our tour, with its spectacular gardens and its curious fountains (almost 400). The Villa itself surrounds on three sides a sixteenth-century courtyard sited on the former Benedictine cloister. The central main entrance leads to the Appartamento Vecchio, the "Old Apartment" made for Ippolito d'Este, with its vaulted ceilings frescoed in secular allegories by Livio Agresti and his students, centered on the grand Sala, with its spectacular view down the main axis of the gardens, which fall away in a series of terraces. To the left and right are suites of rooms, Cardinal Ippolito's library and his bedchamber with the chapel beyond, and the private stairs to the lower apartment, the Appartamento Nobile, which gives directly onto Gran Loggia straddling the gravelled terrace with a triumphal arch motif. The garden plan is laid out on a central axis with subsidiary cross-axes refreshed by some five hundred jets in fountains, pools and water troughs. The copious water is supplied by the Aniene river, which is partly diverted through the town, and by the Rivellese spring, which supplies a cistern under the villa's courtyard.

Includes private car with driver, half-day guided tour with English speaking local guide in Tivoli and entrance fees at Villa D’Este.

Private full-day excursion to Orvieto
For an additional + $120 per person

This morning we depart by private car towards southern Umbria to the goergeus medieval town of Orvieto, built on the flat summit of a tufa mount. Orvieto origins go back to the Etruscan civilization: the first Etruscan settlements, going back to the 9th Century B.C., infact, were found inside the tufaceous caves in the bedrock upon which today rises the city. Very famous for the production of wine, the city holds a masterpiece of Romanesque-Gothic architecture, the Duomo, a large 14th century Roman Catholic cathedral. The construction of the cathedral, dedicated to St. Mary, lasted almost three centuries with the design and style evolving from Romanesque to Gothic as construction progressed; the Gothic façade of the Orvieto Cathedral is one of the great masterpieces of the Late Middle Ages. Through the narrow streets we reach another notable church, San Giovenale, built in 1004, that preserves remnants of ancient frescoes, and San Andrea, with its famous dodecagon tower. On to Santa Chiara square to visit the Church of San Lorenzo de Arari that still preserves remains of frescoes that originally covered the entire church. Other highlights of the tour include the famous Pozzo di San Patrizio (St. Patrick's well) built to solve military problems: one of major problems for the military force encharged to defend the Pope in the Papal Palace was the lack of water, this is why Pope Clement ordered to Antonio Sangallo to build a well that would ensure abundant supply in case the pope should have to ride out another siege. Sangallo's design was unique: the well was equipped with a pair of wide spiral staircases, lit by 72 internal windows, forming a double helix so that mule-drawn carts could descend on one ramp and come back up the other without colliding. Our tour continues with the visit of the ancient etruscan necropolis, located in and out of the city; the Etruscan necropolis of Crocefisso di Tufo that counts a hundred of chamber tombs laid along a rectangular street grid. Return to Rome in the early evening.

Private excursion to Roman Castles
For an additional + $150 per person

Today enjoy an half day drive throught the quiet and colorful Roman countryside with a tour of the famed area called "Castelli Romani", a group of small villages located at short distance to Rome, at the feet of the Alban Hills.
The area of the Castelli occupies an ancient, fertile volcanic area; the former crater is occupied by two lakes, the Lake of Nemi and the Lake of Albano.
This area, very popular since ancient times, has been frequented by the noblemen of Rome for its fresher climate during summer: major families, Orsini, Colonna, Chigi, Aldobrandini just to name a few, ruled in the area; this tradition has been followed by the Popes, that extended their summer residence in Castel Gandolfo, one of the small villages of the area.
Our tour will take you to Frascati, particularly renewed for the production of wine (Frascati white wine). This is the largest village of the area, it is also an important historical and artistical center, and the location of some international scientific laboratories. Frascati holds notable, well preserved villas, built in the past centuries by Popes and by roman aristocracy. Throught scenic landscapes, the tour will then proceed to Marino, also famed for the production of wine and for the Grape Festival, that takes place here since 1924. Marino hosted famous historical figures, from Charles VIII of France to Alfonso II d'Este. The tour passes by Castel Gandolfo, best known as Pope's summer residence, whose ancient origins seems to date back to the 16th century b.C. On to Albano, that lies in the area where the legends say Enea's son founded Alba Longa from where you can admire a stunning panorama of the area.
We then reach Ariccia, where we will have the chance to experience local cuisine at a typical trattoria. Ariccia is famed for its porchetta, (pork meat, slowly roasted with herbs and wild fennel) and it is also famous since historical times for its production of wine.
After lunch the tour proceed along the scenic hills passing by the small villages of Genzano and Nemi before returning back to Rome.

Full day excursion to Tivoli
For an additional + $225 per person

This morning depart Rome for a full day excursion to Tivoli located approximately 45 minutes from Rome, at the falls of the Aniene River, where it issues from the Sabine hills; the panorama from this enchanting hill town offers spectacular views out over the roman countryside.
From Etruscan times Tibur, a Sabine city, was the seat of the Tiburtine Sibyl. The most famous one, that will be the first highlight of our visit, is the Villa Adriana (Hadrian's Villa) and its ruins.
The villa was created as a retreat from Rome for Roman Emperor Hadrian in the early 2nd century. Hadrian was said to dislike the palace on the Palatine Hill and during the later years of his reign, he actually governed the empire from the villa. A large court therefore lived there permanently. A postal service connected them to Rome.
Hadrian's villa was a complex of over 30 buildings, covering an area of at least 1 square kilometre (c. 250 acres) of which much is still unexcavated. The villa was the greatest Roman example of an Alexandrian garden, recreating a sacred landscape. The complex included palaces, several thermae, theatre, temples, libraries, state rooms and quarters for courtiers, praetorians and slaves. One of the most striking and best preserved parts of the Villa are a pool and an artificial grotto which were named Canopus and Serapeum, respectively.
After Hadrian, the villa was used by his various successors. During the decline of the Roman Empire, the villa fell into disuse and was partially ruined. In the 16th century Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este had much of the marble and statues in Hadrian's villa removed to decorate his own Villa d'Este located nearby.
Private full-day excursion to Naples & Pompeii
For an additional + $260 per person

This morning depart by private car from Rome towards Campania Region. Upon arrival to Naples, you will meet your local guide and start the tour of the city. The city, originally founded by the Greeks, then conquered by the Romans in the 4th century B.C. lies halfway between two volcanic areas, the volcano Mount Vesuvius and the Phlegraean Fields, sitting on the coast by the Gulf of Naples. Rich inhabitants of Rome like Virgil, Augustus, Tiberius, Nero used to spend the winter there, but the Neapolitans themselves retained the Greek language and customs until the decline of Empire.
The French Revolution brought here troops and a Parthenopaen Republic was set up. A French kingdom was created next under Napoleon’s brother Joseph Bonaparte. In the modern days, the historic centre of the city is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The metropolitan area of Naples is the second most populated in Italy and one of the largest in all of Europe. Your private driver and your guide will meet you at your hotel from where you will depart on a suggestive drive along the typical colourful areas of this unique city. The tour will start with a nice drive to one of the most popular squares of Naples, Piazza del Plebiscito, hosting many of the most impressive and famous monuments that characterize the city: the Royal Palace on the east of square, older Spanish viceroyal residence from the early 16th century. The 17th century palace visible today is, however, the result of numerous additions and changes, including some by Luigi Vanvitelli in the mid-18th century. On the west side of the square lies the church of San Francesco di Paola The church, with its 53 metres high dome, is reminiscent of the Pantheon in Rome and has a nice façade fronted by a portico; the inside of the church is circular with two side chapels. Nearby is the Teatro di San Carlo, which is the oldest and largest opera house on the Italian peninsula. Directly across from San Carlo is Galleria Umberto, a shopping centre and active centre of Neapolitan social life. Continue to see the famous Piazza Municipio with its huge medieval castle, Castel Nuovo, one of the most notable construction of the city, mostly known as “Maschio Angioino". You will then leave your local guide, and after free time for lunch, you will board your private car again towards the ancient city of Pompei, located approximately 30 km from Naples.
