Ports of Call
Piraeus (Athens), GreeceHigh above pulsating modern Athens, the sereneAcropolis reigns as it has for 25 centuries. Gaze on the timeless majesty of the marble-columned Parthenon. Down in the city, snap a photo of the colorfully-costumed Evzone guards at Constitution Square; go shopping for souvenirs, silver jewelry and bright flotaki rugs.
Kusadasi (Ephesus), Turkey
Ephesus, not far from the port at Kusadasi, is home to the one remaining pillar from the Temple of Artemis—an Ancient Wonder of the World. Marble streets lead past magnificent ruins of temples and baths, and the Celsus Library. Don't miss the amphitheater where St Paul preached to the Ephesians. Roman ruins are also on display at Pirea and Didyma.
Santorini, Greece
Your harbor on this island was created by a volcano in 1500 B.C. and the effect is still explosive: 1,000 foot-high cliffs rise from sea level, and dazzling white houses cling to the cliffs.
Zakynthos, Greece
On an island of song, hearty renditions of traditional 'kantades' are never far from the local tavernas. It's no wonder amidst a riot of flowers, vines and olives – and you may be lucky enough to spot Loggerhead Turtles.
Messina, Sicily, Italy
Messina's astrological clock is as much a man-made masterpiece as the road leading to Taormina, which canitlevers out of the rocky cliff face and stands on impossibly tall pylons. Leave it to the Italians to design a road that's both a thrill-ride and a feat of engineering! Once you're safely in Taormina, walk to the sublime Greco-Roman theatre that overlooks Naxos Bay and snow-capped Mt. Etna, and spend some time on the Corso Umberto with a gelato firmly in hand.
Amalfi, Italy
Almalfi - the very name conjures up images of shimmering seas, vertical villages, and roads that teeter up rocky cliffsides with reckless abandon. While the beautiful people wear dark glasses and snub the paparazzi, the rest of us drink in the sun and style that are so endemic to Italy's fabulous coast. And dahling, be sure to visit the boutiques on the Sorrentine peninsula for some dark glasses of your own!
Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy
In the footsteps of the Ceasars you will spend your time in the Eternal City. From the Roman Forum, it's a short walk to the Colosseum, the Arch of Constantine and Palatine Hill. Across the Tiber River, the Sovereign State of the Vatican holds the key to the Sistine Chapel and Bernini's awesome colonnade.
Livorno (Florence/Pisa), Italy
Timeless treasures are around every corner in Florence, an hour's drive from Livorno-the Duomo that represents Brunelleschi's pinnacle of achievement, Giotto's bell tower, Michelangelo's David, the Uffizi Gallery, and the Ponte Vecchio. Closer yet, in Pisa see the Tower, still standing, if crookedly, after 650 years.
Monte Carlo, Monaco
Nothing more than a tiny Principality, Monaco steals much more of the international limelight than its size decently permits. But it's the Grand Casino, of course, where you must peer into the enchanting Salon Rose to see its naked nymph-clad ceiling. It's also the palace and the cathedral, the Rock of Monaco and the harbor, packed to the gills with million-dollar motor yachts—and those are just the modest ones.
Marseille, France
Located on the southeastern coast of France on the Mediterranean Sea, Marseille is the oldest city in the country and second largest after Paris. Thanks to its long and unique past - Greek sailors originally settled the city back in 600 B.C. - this bustling port is filled with history and amazing architecture. It's also one of the most picturesque ports in the country, with fantastic views and scenic backdrops. Explore the Old Port and mingle with the locals, who know where the best cut flowers and bouillabaisse can be found. Tour to Avignon with its grandiose Palace of the Popes; or to spectacular Les Baux village, named for the prolific bauxite in the hills and perched high atop a craggy spire that seems to defy a basic principle—gravity!
Barcelona, Spain
Located on the Mediterranean Sea, Barcelona is Spain's most cosmopolitan city. It is especially well known for its vitality and style, as you will see on Las Ramblas, Barcelona's main thoroughfare. The city, while boasting monuments that are Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance in style, also captivates visitors with its incredible modern architecture. Among those worthy of attention, are the works of the legendary architect Antonio Gaudi.
