Itinerary Map
Ports of Call
Istanbul, TurkeyBlurring the line between east and west, Istanbul stands at the crossroads of two continents. The city's architecture is rivalled only by its spectacular natural setting on the Bosphorus Strait. See the Blue Mosque, the Topkapi Palace and the Byzantine Church of St Sophia. Take time to wander through the Grand Bazaar or the Spice Market and sample baklava and shish kebabs.
Aegean Sea (Cruising)
Heraklion, Crete, Greece
Crete's Palace of Knossos opens a window on the Minoan world of 3,000 years ago. The dread Minotaur, conquered by Theseus, dwelt below the palace. Also on Crete: lovely mountain scenery, gorgeous beaches.
Mediterranean Sea (Cruising)
Valletta, Malta
Thick sandstone walls fortify Valletta, holding within its stone streets and glorious architecture. It fees like a travesty, walking over the detailed inlaid marble floors of the the cathedrals, but they are there to be seen and appreciated. The Silent City is Mdina, on the far side of the island, where no cars are permitted to disrupt the serene streets. Keep an eye out for the legendary, aged yellow buses of Malta which appear to be on their last legs, but are in fact a revered and flawlessly maintained piece of Maltese heritage.
La Goulette, Tunisia
Stroll Tunis' spirited medina where close-packed souks offer silver, perfumes, spices, carpets and other treasures at fire sale prices. Sharpen your haggling skills here—it's anticipated! At the edge of the Sahara, the Phoenician city at Carthage now lies in windswept ruins, but once was the glorious rival of Rome.
Casablanca, Morocco
Travel from Casablanca, the city of Bergman and Bogart, and tour to Rabat, Morocco's serene capital. In the south, on the edge of the Western Sahara, Marrakech is the city of souks, storytellers, snake charmers and the famed Koutoubia Minaret.
Atlantic Ocean (Cruising)
Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands
Lush green banana plantations give way to pine forests, then a jumbled landscape of volcanic rock. Ahead on Tenerife is Spain's highest peak, Mt. Tiede, with a stupendous view from the top. When Columbus stopped by in 1498, Tiede was erupting, but it's now sedately dormant.
Dakar, Senegal
Dakar has emerged from the traditional western Africa as a contemporary Capital, with an abundance of galleries, artists' studios, museums, and festivals. Enjoy the shopping and unique crafts, or spend some time golfing, biking, or relaxing on its pristine beaches.
Banjul, Gambia
A beautiful characteristic of Banjul and Gambia is the extraordinary amount of color unabashedly on display—in the fabric of a headdress, the paint on a fishing boat, the skins of the exotic fruits on a marketplace stall and in the clothing of young children.
Abidjan, Ivory Coast
The "Paris of West Africa,"Abidjan offers soaring skyscrapers, chic boutiques, and smart hotels, including the famed Hotel Ivoire. Inland, the Dan carve divine masks of wood and copper and dance for the spirits on three-metre stilts.
Cotonou, Benin
Touring highlights abound, including the stilt-village of Ganvie; the World Heritage site of Abomey, once the great kingdom of Dahomey; and Ouidah, a voodoo center where you may buy a charm from a fetish-priest.
Walvis Bay, Namibia
The apricot-colored sand dunes behind Walvis Bay are populated by gemsbok, springbok, ostrich, brown hyena, the rare, long-legged desert elephant, and sometimes even cheetah-amazing for such an apparently inhospitable environment. Inching ever closer is the relentless Namib Desert.
Cape Town, South Africa
Once dubbed the "Tavern of the Seas," Cape Town is now more sedately known as South Africa's "Mother City." Here, a cable-car ride to the top of Table Mountain is in order, or a visit to the wineries and Cape Dutch buildings of Stellenbosch. If your African experience would be incomplete without a safari, head for Sabi Sabi Game Reserve.
