Ports of Call

Sydney, Australia
First came the Aborigines, 50,000 years ago; then 759 British convicts, followed by a wave of military settlers known as the "Rum Corps." The result? Australia's premier city in a location second to none, with its own brand of devil-may-care sophistication. Make sure you explore the Rocks district where the original settlers lived, see the opera house that is one of the world's great landmarks, and climb (yes, climb) the Sydney Harbor Bridge where, like it or not, you'll throw caution to the wind!

Noumea, New Caledonia
New Caledonia's lush beauty has earned it many names, including "The Island Closest to Paradise" and "The St. Tropez of the Pacific." The poincianas, or flame trees, will color the island with their bright red umbrellas when you visit.

Suva, Vita Levu, Fiji Islands
Suva is Fiji's traditional Pacific capital and dates back to the 1800s. In many places, colonial character still oozes among its palm-lined streets and old buildings. Capitalism and the 21st century have also caught up with Suva, and are manifested in the city's shops, cafes, markets and hopping nightlife.

Westbound Crossing of International Date Line
The International Date Line is an imaginary line on the earth's surface, at approximately the 180th meridian (LONGITUDE). Traveling east across the line, takes the traveler back one day; traveling west, takes the traveler forward one day. Without the International Date Line travelers going westward would discover that when they returned home, one day more than they thought had passed, even though they had kept careful tally of the days. This first happened to Magellan's crew after the first circumnavigation of the globe!

Apia, Upolu, Western Samoa
Lush and volcanic, the nine islands of Samoa constitute a reef-fringed oasis in the vast Pacific Ocean. One of Apia's greatest attractions is a hotel—Aggie Gray's— immortalized by Michener and frequented by Robert Louis Stevenson, Marlon Brando and Gary Cooper. Other worthy elements include rain forests, waterfalls, craters, blowholes, beaches, and the ever-present fa'a Samoa—the Samoan Way.

Honolulu, Hawaii
Imagine spending all day and all night on gorgeous Honolulu. You'll need time to take in this beautiful island with its pulsating nightlife, world-class dining, perfect beaches and quiet coves. Stroll the fabled beaches of Waikiki under the protective watch of the ancient volcanic profile of Diamond Head. Visit the Polynesian Cultural Center, a 42-acre living museum of the many cultures of the South Pacific. And be sure to stop off at the historic USS Arizona Memorial, dedicated to those who died at Pearl Harbor.

San Diego, California
San Diego is not just the home of its world-famous zoo. Not only did Golf Digest name San Diego one of its top 50 destinations, Sports Illustrated once dubbed it "Sports Town USA." The downtown cityscape, beaches, national monuments and unique attractions — such as Legoland California — make San Diego a destination worthy of any travel itinerary. And, of course, there's always the zoo!
