Argentina

You hear plenty of talk about gauchos and the tango when you mention Argentina, but for many travelers it is the country's natural wonders that are the primary attraction. They range from the northern deserts to the southern Andean cordillera and from Iguazu Falls to the magnificent desolation of Patagonia. On top of this there's the capital Buenos Aires - a fabulous city either renowned for its sophistication or derided for its derivative neo-European culture, depending on which way you choose to look at such things.

In fact, the overwhelming feature of Argentina's, largely immigrant population is the degree to which the cultural traits of Europe have remained intact during their transposition to the so-called New World. For such reasons, Argentina, is one Latin American country in which Europeans, North Americans and Anglophones can feel at ease and travel relatively inconspicuously. An interest in soccer and some nimble foot skills may be all you need to feel like a local.

If you happen to visit Buenos Aires, you will see a sprawling megalopolis that rises from the Rio Plata and stretches more than 75 square miles to the surrounding pampas, the fertile Argentine plains. The capital city of Argentina, looks more like Paris, block after block of tidy, high-rise apartment buildings interspersed with 19th-century houses continue as far as the eye can see.
The elegance of Europe and the spirit of South America live side by side in Buenos Aires. Founded by immigrants along the shores of the Rio de la Plata, Buenos Aires built its identity on Spanish, Italian, and French influences, which appear in the grand boulevards, expansive parks, magnificent architecture, and ever-changing fashion of Argentina's, beautiful capital. Take a walk through neighborhoods like Recoleta and Belgrano, for example, and you will be convinced you are in the 16th district of Paris. Even Porteos, as residents of Buenos Aires are called, characterize themselves as more European than South American.
If Buenos Aires has a European face, its soul is intensely Latin. This is a city where the sun shines brightly, where people speak passionately, where family and friendship still come first. It is a city where locals interact, lining the streets, packing cafe terraces, and strolling in parks and plazas. Visit the historic neighborhoods of San Telmo and La Boca, where the first immigrants arrived, and you will find working-class Argentines living alongside the city's oldest tango salons. Stand in Plaza de Mayo, the historic center of Buenos Aires where citizens gather in pivotal moments, to gain a sense of the city's political and social dynamism. Walk along the revived harbor of Puerto Madero to see where Argentina reaches out to the rest of the world.

While exploring Buenos Aires, you will find a city of contradictions. Great wealth exists alongside considerable--if often hidden--poverty. The economy has been stagnant, but hotels and restaurants remain inexplicably full. Porteos seem self-assured, although the population is intensely image-conscious. Buenos Aires defines Argentina, yet has little to do with the rest of the country. All these elements demonstrate the complexity of a city searching for identity between its South American and European influences. In addition, they make Buenos Aires an unusual and fascinating place.
