Raised by the world-famous artist Gerald Coulson, it’s no surprise that Lawrence Coulson has followed in his father’s footsteps, but it wasn’t an easy path. While Lawrence enjoyed painting and drawing as a child and was encouraged in these endeavors by his father, he got a “D” in art class at school and went into retail instead. Eventually he began working in the sales department of a local family firm and worked his way to the position of marketing manager. Lawrence was very good at his job, but he was not satisfied, so his father encouraged him to try painting again. This time, the passion was brought to life and it was not long before he exhibited his work locally and sold his first painting.

Lawrence kept painting as a hobby while still retaining his full-time managing job, but in 1996 he had his “big break.” A friend of his owned a restaurant and invited Lawrence to display his work there and hold a private exhibition. Coulson invited The Halcyon Gallery to the show, which proved to be a wise decision as they purchased nearly every painting he had on display. For the next year, the gallery’s interest in his work compelled him to paint during his free time, but by September of 1997 he realized that what was a hobby could actually be his full-time job; that month he committed himself to being a professional artist. Since then, Lawrence Coulson has continued to attract admirers and art enthusiasts around the world and his fan base has been growing exponentially.
