12 Day IndoChina Family Experience to Vietnam and Cambodia

Day 1 • Arrive Hanoi

Arrive at your Deluxe accommodations.


Day 2 • Hanoi (B)

On arrival at Hanoi Cooking Centre (HCC), try a cup of La Han, a special Vietnamese tea, before going across the road to taste pho, a typical food of Hanoians. Take another short walk to Chau Long Market to see all sorts of fresh vegetables, live fish, frogs, eels, and silk worms, along with other bizarre products. Next stop is Hang Ga to sample banh cuon (steamed rice noodle filled with pork and mushrooms), and a short walk away is Ngo Cho Dong Xuan where you can taste Hanoian's traditional dishes: bun cha, prawn cake, and/or snail soup. On the way back, stop at Yen Phu to visit a typical old cafe dating back to 1936 before returning to HCC. Later, visit the Museum of Ethnology (closed on Mondays and on Vietnamese New Year—alternative visit to Vietnamese Women's Museum) which brings to life the astonishing ethnic diversity in Vietnam, with art and artifacts from the 54 different ethnic groups that inhabit the country. Inside the museum are detailed descriptions of minority groups, with examples of their traditional clothing and way of life. Continue to Hoan Kiem Lake with an islet containing the tiny Tortoise Pagoda. From there, venture on to explore the Old Quarter. This fascinating network of narrow alleys and shop houses is also known as the 36 Streets, each street being named after the merchandise traditionally sold there, ranging from fabrics and crafts to medicines and even tombstones. A handicraft lover's paradise, the Old Quarter is a fascinating area to explore local life. Afterward, see a Water Puppet Show, a fantastic art form originating in northern Vietnam and best seen in Hanoi.


Day 3 • Hanoi / Son Tay (B, L, D)

Arrive at Moon Garden in Son Tay and spend some time exploring the homestay, wander into Ky Son village, or take a cooking class. After lunch, indulge in a traditional hand spa and then chat with the family and learn some Vietnamese. The more energetic can take a choice of two bike rides: Short ride: a 6-km ride to discover the nearby farming communities, visit a local home, the kindergarten (if open), and chat with local people about their daily life. Help out with plowing, making rice beds, transplanting seedlings, or harvesting rice. Long ride: a 12-km ride to discover the farming communities. Also visit the Duong Lam ancient village to see the Mia Pagoda and Mong Phu Communal House. Cycle back along the ritual paths of Thang Thac village and discover the Ngo Quyen tomb and Phung Hung temple. Return to Moon Garden for a steam bath. Observe the evening Buddha worship and then sit down to dinner. Before bedtime, enjoy a foot bath with ginger, salt, and mugwort medicinal herbs.


Day 4 • Son Tay / Hanoi / Ha Long (B, L)

Before breakfast, try traditional Yi Jin Jing exercises and then have a stroll around Ky Son village to interact with the locals and learn about their daily life and farming. Visit a villager’s bee house or maybe help the farmers in the fields, depending on the harvest season. Visit the kindergarten (when open) and see what goods are on offer at the village market. Back at Moon Garden, have lunch and enjoy free time until your departure by relaxing in a hammock, taking photos wearing traditional Vietnamese clothes, or exploring the local area. Later, you will be transferred to Ha Long via Hanoi.


Day 5 • Ha Long / Hanoi / Danang / Hoi An (B, L)

Today, you will be transferred to Tuan Chau Marina Port for a boat excursion through the incredible limestone karsts of Ha Long Bay. After lunch on board, paddle through these islets: Stone Dog, Incense Burner (Dinh Huong), and Fighting Cock (Ga Choi). Finally, experience the unparalleled majesty of Ha Long Bay by visiting Thien Cung Cave (Heavenly Grotto) on a guided walking exploration highlighting the incredible natural artwork inside. Continue to explore the areas of Ba Hang by bamboo rowing boat or by kayaking yourself. Return to the main boat and sail back to Tuan Chau Island. From there, you will be transferred back to Hanoi’s Noi Bai Airport for your flight to Danang. Upon arrival in Danang, you will be transferred to your hotel in Hoi An.


Day 6 • Hoi An (B, L)

Combine an off-the-beaten-track bicycle ride with a glimpse into the traditional arts of Hoi An. The town of Hoi An has a reputation for its distinctive arts and crafts. It is home to many factories and workshops, where the ancient techniques first introduced by the ancestors of the town's families are still being followed to this day. These exquisite handicrafts are produced using local materials such as bamboo, wood and Vietnamese fabrics. Hop on your bike and cycle to the pier. Then, along with your bicycle, board a boat for a cruise to Cam Kim Island. Ride through the lush surroundings, stopping at some of the authentic workshops to see how wooden boats, traditional basket boats, and beautiful carpets are made. From here, take another cruise to the east of Hoi An and visit Cam Thanh village, where endless nipa palm forests cover hectares of land. These abundant forests provide the locals with bamboo, an essential raw material from which they build houses, make beautiful handicrafts and even sturdy bamboo bicycles. Visit a bamboo workshop and try your hand at this popular craft before cycling back to the old town. Hoi An, a picturesque riverside town, was one of Southeast Asia's major international ports during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Take a walking tour through many of the town's highlights including the Japanese Covered Bridge (constructed in 1593 by the Japanese community to link the town with the Chinese quarters across the stream), Sa Huynh Museum (which houses exhibitions from the earliest period of Hoi An's history), the Tran Family Chapel (a 200-year-old house built for worshipping ancestors), and Phuoc Kien Assembly Hall (a Chinese pagoda built around 1690 and enlarged in 1900, typical of the Chinese clans in the Hoi An area and dedicated to Thien Hau Thanh Mau, the Goddess of the Sea and Protector of Sailors and Fishermen). Also meander into the Ha Linh lantern-making workshop to see how the lantern frames are made and adorned in silk cloth. Try your hand at making a lantern that can be kept as a souvenir.


Day 7 • Hoi An / Danang / Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) (B)

Today, you will be transferred to Danang’s airport for your flight to Ho Chi Minh City (also known as Saigon). Upon arrival in Saigon, you will be met by our local representative and transferred to your hotel. A vibrant metropolis, Saigon teems with energy, activity, and motion. Everywhere you look, you see the convergence of traditional and modern life. Begin the trip into modern history with a tour of the Reunification Palace. Formerly the Independence Palace of the South Vietnamese president, this 60s-style building was famously stormed by tanks on April 30th, 1975, signifying the fall of South Vietnam. It has been preserved in its original state, and the original tanks remain on display near the entrance gates. Afterward, visit the historic center and the Emperor of Jade Pagoda, one of Saigon's most interesting pagodas. Proceed to pay a quick visit to the neo-Romanesque Notre Dame Basilica (currently under renovation) and the Central Post Office. Pass by the classic European-style landmarks such as the ornate City Hall (Hotel De Ville) and the old Opera House (both may only be viewed from the outside). Finally, end up at the central Ben Thanh Market, where vendors display a vast array of goods and handicrafts, appealing to every taste.


Day 8 • Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) (B, D)

Never discovered by American forces, the Cu Chi Tunnels were an important Vietcong base during the American War. Stretching over 200 km, this incredible underground network, dug by hand out of hard laterite, connected command posts, hospitals, a shelter, and weapon factories. Today, you can walk through the area and learn about the day-to-day life of the Vietcong, bear witness to the cleverly disguised entrances and elaborate booby-traps, and even venture inside the tunnels, some of which have been modified to accommodate tourists. Afternoon is at leisure.


Day 9 • Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) / Siem Reap (B)

Today, you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Cambodia. Upon arrival in Siem Reap, you will be met by our local representative (who will be carrying an ICS Travel Group sign with your name) and transferred to your hotel. Begin your sightseeing in Angkor at Angkor Wat, the crowning jewel of Khmer architecture and the national symbol and highlight of any visit to Cambodia. The largest, best preserved, and most religiously significant of the Angkorian temples, Angkor Wat impresses visitors both by its sheer scale and beautifully proportioned layout, as well as the delicate artistry of its carvings. To approach the temple, first cross the vast moat, continuing along a broad causeway lined with naga balustrades. As you enter the main building, ascend through a series of galleries and a courtyard before reaching the central sanctuary offering beautiful views back over the causeway and across the surrounding countryside. On the way, stop to enjoy the intricate stone carvings that adorn nearly every surface with some 1,700 Apsaras (celestial dancers) sculpted into the walls. Along the outer gallery walls runs the longest continuous bas-relief in the world, which narrates stories from Hindu mythology, including the famous Churning of the Ocean of Milk. Angkor Wat is stunning at any time of the day, but sunrise and sunset are especially beautiful times to watch the play of light on the stones. Afterward, watch the sunset over the Cambodian countryside from the upper terraces of an ancient Angkorian temple.


Day 10 • Siem Reap (B, L, D)

Today, visit Banteay Srei—built in the late 10th century, it is a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva. The temple is square with entrances on the east and the west. Of main interest are the three central towers decorated with male and female divinities and beautiful filigree relief work. Next, visit the Banteay Srey Butterfly Centre, an interactive butterfly facility located on the road to the Banteay Srey Temple. Experience the butterflies flying and feeding, and witness the complete life cycle of many species. The butterflies (in pupae form) are farmed sustainably by people from villages in the Siem Reap province. Enjoy the unforgettable Khmer traditional cuisine lunch at a local village (at Bong Thom Homestay/Restaurant). After lunch, you can experience ox cart riding across the village to see the cultivation, a local home, sugar palm makers, and handicrafts (The availability of sugar palm makers and a handicraft program depends on the season—not available around May – Oct. If the program is not available, an alternative program, e.g. palm leaves basket makers, farm visit, etc., will be offered.) Transfer to/from restaurant by tuk tuk. Later, enjoy dinner and show at Phare, The Cambodian Circus which blends contortion, juggling, acrobatics, balancing, and aerial arts with theater, music, and modern dance to tell uniquely Cambodian stories. The young Cambodian artists come from some of the most difficult social and economic backgrounds imaginable, but through Phare, they have successfully transformed their lives. Before the performance tucks into a delicious dinner, sit back and enjoy the unique circus show. The energy, enthusiasm, and lust for life of the performers make this an inspiring experience for both adults and children.


Day 11 • Siem Reap (B, L)

Today, set out on a tuk tuk ‘treasure hunt’ of the Angkorian temples including the mysterious Bayon, the jungle-covered Ta Prohm, and the fortified city of Angkor Thom. Afterward, learn how water blessings are a traditional Cambodian practice that dates back to ancient times. There are two main forms of the water blessing which you can participate in. The first is a blessing accompanied by a light sprinkling of water. The second is a longer ritual where you will be covered in water blessed by the monks. For this ritual, you can change into a sarong so your clothing remains dry. At the end of the blessing, your wrist is adorned with special red ties that signify the blessing performed. Blessings can be performed for individuals but are also a special way for newlyweds to celebrate their union. The water blessing is said to bring peace, good luck, and happiness. Receive a blessing of your own during today’s 1-hour water blessing experience at the Tep Pranom pagoda. For a fun-filled time for all ages, enjoy an exhilarating flight through the tropical rainforest. Not far from the temples of Angkor is the Flight of the Gibbon, a unique zip line canopy course that has been engineered to the highest standards. After a thorough safety briefing and an introduction to the equipment, prepare to start your eco-adventure. Fly through the tropical rainforest, zipping between suspended sky bridges, and traverse hanging bridges that span hundreds of meters. View the surrounding jungle from the treetop platforms and abseil from towering trees. Throughout the morning, you will be accompanied by the sky rangers who will share their knowledge of the Cambodian jungle. Special note: Clients who wish to book and participate in this activity will be requested to sign an ICS release form, either prior to arrival or on the ground before commencing the tour. With your feet firmly back on land, enjoy lunch in the natural surroundings before heading back to your hotel.


Day 12 • Depart Siem Reap (B)

After breakfast, bid farewell to Southeast Asia, as you board your departing flight home/onward.
