As of September 1, 2017 Mexican Municipal Administration implemented an environmental tax, applicable to all guests. This government tax is obligatory per room, per night, for all Guests staying in the state of Quintana Roo; effective on January 7, 2020 the rate is $26 MXN (Mexican Pesos), equivalent of $1.40 (US Dollars), subject to changes in the exchange rate. 
It is paid directly by the guest on the day of check-in, with the hotel acting simply as an intermediary tax collector between the guest and the municipality.
